Filtered Mask Variation

This Mask has a pocket for a filter and a metal nose piece. It seals well.

Each mask will use a rectangular piece of tightly woven cotton fabric, approximately 8 x 15.75 inches, plus 2 pieces each 2 x 42 inches. There is a 5 mm wide flat wire piece, about 4 inches long that will be used as a nose piece.

Fold each 42 inch long piece in half lengthwise, with wrong sides together. Serge along the length and ends, or use a zig zag stitch. Press.

For a smoother look, you can create your own bias tape from the ties. Fold the outside edges in one half inch on both edges. Press. Fold in half along length and press.

Take the large piece of fabric and on the narrower ends, fold 1/2 inside, and then again and press.

Take the metal nose piece and place it in the center of one of the double folded seams. Pin in place.

Sew anchor ends down narrow sides of metal piece. Sew down the folded seam, being careful not to hit the metal piece.

On the other narrow end, sew down the double fold seam.

Fold the material in half, right sides together. Both double folded seams should align. Sew the long edges closed with a narrow seam (1/4”) or serge. Flip inside out. Sew from the metal nose piece to the outside on both sides of nose piece. If you did this correctly, you will end up with and opening at the top of the piece.

Make 3 pleats parallel to the top (nose piece) end. Pin and sew the sides closed, about 1/2 “. Press pleats down. Each side should be between 3 1/2 and 4 inches long and the width should be about 7 inches.

Sew pleats into place, just outside the outer seam.

Take a tie, divide in half and pin it in the middle of one side of mask on the back side, sew in place. Repeat on other side. To reinforce, Bar tack at each of the four corners.
